What the MJ Biopic Got Right (and Wrong) About Vitiligo
The Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” has arrived — and for the vitiligo community, it is more than just another Hollywood release.
Michael was one of the most famous people in the world to live with vitiligo. Yet for decades, his condition was surrounded by jokes, rumors, and tabloid mythology instead of basic medical understanding.

What many still don’t know
The date itself — June 25 — was chosen by Nigerian vitiligo advocate Ogo Maduewesi in memory of Michael Jackson, to honor his struggle and help combat stigma around the condition, especially across Africa.
Michael’s fans also played a remarkable role in the early World Vitiligo Day movement. Their support helped push the WVD petition toward nearly 500,000 signatures, with about 270,000 coming directly from the Michael Jackson community, landing briefly at the UN Calendar.
The Verdict
The new film acknowledges Michael’s vitiligo on screen. That visibility matters. But many in the community feel the movie only scratches the surface of what the condition meant — medically, emotionally, and culturally.
Lee Thomas – longtime vitiligo spokesperson and 4x Emmy Award-winning TV host – reviewed the movie and gave it a B-minus, saying:
“Michael’s entertaining, decent watch… very entertaining, thumbs up.”
While the film is a win for visibility, many in our community feel it only scratches the surface of what the condition truly meant for Michael — medically, emotionally, and culturally.
This is why the conversation still matters. Vitiligo is not a punchline. It’s a real condition lived by real people every single day. So perhaps this is not the final word. It is the opening of a better conversation.
Fun Fact
The iconic “ROCK WITH US” World Vitiligo Day T-shirt was designed by Olumide Omololu from Lagos, Nigeria (Ocube Interactive).
He won the official Vi-Tee Contest organized by the Vitiligo Research Foundation in 2013-2014.
